I saw two wrens up in the tree,
Outlined by morning’s golden air.
One waved a fat earthworm at me.
They seemed to be without a care.
Below, two young squirrels rolled and played,
Still plump from winter’s cache of nuts.
They leap and jump and trade insults,
Lash gray fluffed tails on wiggling butts.
A doe saunters past, uncaring of me.
Behind her danced a spotted fawn.
I’m pleased to be part of this company
On this day just after dawn.
